Terms of service

These terms apply when you use this website, book a call, or buy a coaching package from Upturn, a coaching practice run by Jess Romero in Chicago, Illinois (“I”, “me”). By booking or paying, you agree to them. They’re written to be read, so please read them.

What coaching is, and isn’t

Career coaching helps you think clearly, decide and prepare. It isn’t therapy, counseling, legal or financial advice, or a recruitment service. I don’t place people in jobs, and I can’t promise any particular result: a new role, a promotion or a salary. What happens next is up to you; my job is to help you get ready for it.

If you’re dealing with something that needs a therapist or another professional, I’ll tell you, and I’m happy to help you find one.

The free call

The first call is 30 minutes, free, and comes with no obligation. You’ll never be asked to buy anything on the call itself. If either of us doesn’t think coaching is the right fit, that’s the end of it.

Packages and payment

• Single session: $180, paid when you book.

• 6-week sprint: $900, paid before the first session.

• 3-month program: $2,400, paid up front or in three monthly payments of $800.

Prices are in US dollars and include everything listed on the Packages section of this site. Sessions are 50 minutes on video. Sessions in a package should be used within the package period (6 weeks or 3 months). If life gets in the way, ask me, and we’ll extend it once by up to a month.

Rescheduling and cancellations

You can reschedule any session for free up to 24 hours before it starts, using the link in your confirmation email. Sessions cancelled or missed with less than 24 hours’ notice count as used, except in a genuine emergency. I’ll always use my judgment kindly.

If I need to reschedule, I’ll give you as much notice as I can and you’ll never lose a session because of me.

Refunds

If the first paid session of any package isn’t right for you, tell me within 7 days and I’ll refund the whole package. After that, unused sessions aren’t refundable, but you can pause a package once, for up to three months.

Confidentiality

What you share in coaching is confidential, as described in the Privacy policy. I’ll only break that confidentiality if the law requires it or someone is at serious risk of harm.

Your part

Coaching works best when you show up on time, do the small tasks between sessions, and tell me honestly when something isn’t working. You’re responsible for your own decisions, including any decision to apply for, accept or leave a job.

The worksheet and other materials

The Sunday Night Audit and anything I send you during coaching are for your personal use. Please don’t resell or republish them. Sharing a copy with a friend who needs it is fine.

The website

I try to keep this site accurate and working, but it’s provided as is. Links to other sites are there for convenience; I’m not responsible for what’s on them.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, my total liability to you for anything related to coaching is limited to the amount you paid for the package in question. I’m not liable for indirect losses, such as a job you didn’t get or income you didn’t earn.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois. If we disagree about something, let’s talk first. Most things can be sorted out with an email.

Changes to these terms

I may update these terms from time to time. The version on this page when you book is the one that applies to that booking.
